Mercadona to Challenge Eroski With a Logistics Hub in Vitoria

15/07/2014 – Cinco Dias

The store chain chaired by Juan Roig has chosen a 150.000 square meter plot belonging to Gilsa, controlled by Vitoria´s City Council and held by the principal Basque authorities, to lay foundations for its future expansion in Euskadi where currently Mercadona is absent.

Announcing intention of the purchase, Roig´s chain sends a message to the competition, mainly to another large storechain Eroski, that its bet on the north of Spain is firm. In the next six years, the company foresees openings of 25 shops, creation of 1.000 stable job positions, an investment of over €50 million and cooperation with local agricultural goods and service providers based on contracts amounting to €150 million.

Apart from three new stores to be opened in Vitoria-Gasteiz, other establishments will appear Alto de Armentia, Ali Gobeo and the Esmaltaciones area. The firm´s strategic plan also assumes construction of shops in Basauri and Baracaldo (Biscay), as well as in Irun (Gipuzkoa).

Presently, the logistics network area of Mercadona occupies over 770.000 square meters.

At the end of 2013, Mercadona´s network encompassed 1.467 supermarkets employing 74.000 people.
