Aldi Opens its Largest store in Portugal in the North and Plans 10 New Stores

8 May 2018

The German chain has been operating in Portugal for 12 years. Last year, the company opened its first stores in the country’s north.

This Wednesday, Aldi opened its largest store in Portugal, in Maia. This year, the German chain is planning on opening ten new stores in the country.

The 1,200-square-meter store in Maia is the German chain’s largest store, representing a significant bet by the company in Portugal’s North, where it started its expansion late last year. The chain did not disclose the size of its investment in the new space. “As our expansion has increased, we have managed to optimise our investments in new stores. Initially, the store will have about 20 employees, a number which may increase, depending on the flow of customers in the store,” an official source at the company told Dinheiro Vivo.

The German chain currently operates 59 stores in Portugal and has plans to expand its presence in the Portuguese market.

“Aldi Portugal is in a clear phase of expansion in Portugal. This year, we plan to open about a dozen new stores, addressing our absence in some areas of the country and strengthening our presence in some areas where we already operate, but we have the potential for additional growth,” the same source added.

During its first 12 years of operations in Portugal, Aldi focused its expansion in the Central and Southern zones of the country, where it opened approximately 30 stores in the last five years.
