2018 Is a Year of “Reinvention” for the Retail Sector

31 January 2018

With no new shopping centres expected in the next few years, 2018 looks to be the year where the retail sector will focus on reinventing itself. The industry has a pipeline of expansions and renovations of existing spaces of about 62,000 m2, according to Patrícia Barão, Head of Retail at JLL, during her presentation of the Market 360º report.

Having reached its peak of maturity at the level of development, though two new malls opened in 2017, the retail sector in Portugal is going through several changes, focused upon the expansion and renovation of existing facilities. Colombo, Norte Shopping, Oeiras Park and Glincias Plaza all have planned expansion projects.

“The modernisation and redesign of food courts in centres such as CascaiShopping and the Amoreiras Shopping Center and the accommodation of pop-up concepts, as is the case in the Centro Colombo, are excellent examples of an attentive and highly professional sector,” Ms Barão noted.

The executive also sees a need to create new experiences associated with shopping centres, particularly in their associated leisure spaces. Not only do malls need to reinvent themselves, but the growing interest on the part of brands for street-based shops and the growth of online commerce is forcing such a reinvention.
