Urban Renewal on the Rise in Viana do Castelo

11 July 2018

The Viana do Castelo city council recorded 1,900 proposals for urban rehabilitation works in three years. “Just in 2017, private investment reached almost 20 million euros” – said José Maria Costa, mayor of the municipality of Minho, speaking to journalists at the conference “Urban Rehabilitation in Viana do Castelo – Investments and Financing Instruments.” The mayor said that despite the work done since 2013, the county “needs, over the coming years, more than 200-300 new housing units plus two to three four-star hotels, to meet the needs of the county in light of the events it hosts.”

As examples of the “great need” for accommodation in the county, the mayor noted that “about six national and international congresses” are currently planned for the capital of Alto Minho.

Mayor Costa said that “between 2014 and 2017, investments in urban rehabilitation amounted to 60 million euros,” stressing that “in the last three years, private investment has been around 40 million euros and that, the municipality has made about 20 million euros in investments.”

“Just in 2017, private investment reached almost 20 million euros, more than double the figure in 2016,” he said.

The city council “will invest, by 2020, under its Strategic Urban Development Plan (PEDU), 20 million euros in 30 different projects in the seven different Areas of Urban Rehabilitation (ARU).
