According to data from the municipality, “about 75,000 people” live in the municipal districts, corresponding to “more than 15% of the city’s population.” In Porto, there are also more than 1,000 open requests for social housing.

6,312 people applied for housing in Lisbon’s 70 municipal districts. The figure exceeds the previous record for applications by almost a thousand. That record, 5,414, was reached in 2010, the year in which the Lisbon City Council first created regulations for the allocation of social housing, the newspaper Público revealed Saturday.

According to data from the municipality, “about 75,000 people” live in the municipal districts, corresponding to “more than 15% of the city’s population.” After the peak of 2010, the number of applications declined in the following years but resumed continual growth since 2013.

There are also 13,000 social housing units in Porto, where 30,000 people reside, which makes the local city council the owner of “about 12% of the city’s total housing stock.” Currently, the list of requests for social housing “exceeds 1,000,” the local authority stated. On average 300 dwellings are allocated per year.
