Rehabilitation of the Former Headquarters of the DN Will Begin “Very Soon”

19 May 2018

The construction license for the rehabilitation project that will be undertaken at the former headquarters of the Diário de Notícias, on Lisbon’s Avenida de Liberdade, is expected to be issued “very shortly,” Aniceto Viegas, the general-director of Avenue told Lusa.

The project for the DN building, which was acquired by Avenue, is “in the licensing phase and we hope to have a building permit very soon. We expect it within a few weeks, [the licensing] is already in the final phase,” Mr Viegas said.

According to the executive, there is currently no set date for the beginning of construction, since it is “actually dependent on the issuance of the license.”

As early as March 2017, Aniceto Viegas had guaranteed that the building’s former characteristics would be restored. The building will be converted into five floors of housing (32 one- to four-bedroom flats with areas starting at 45 square meters). The project will also provide for a 400-square-meter penthouse on the top floor and 56 parking spaces.

The Diário de Notícias’ former ground floor store will continue to be a commercial space and will be restored to its original size. The lobbies and window frames will be restructured, he added at the time, stating that Contacto Atlântico will carry out the architectural project for the rehabilitation of the newspaper’s former headquarters.

Sales are expected to begin in the second half of this year.
