Portuguese Government Looks to Turn Gold into Green

17 December 2019 – The Portuguese government is considering whether to create a new type of golden visa, which would be known instead as a green visa. The program would grant this kind of visa to people who invest in high-value environmental projects.

The proposed State Budget 2020 includes a request for legislative authorisation intended to “favour the promotion of investment in low-density regions, as well as investment in urban renewal, cultural heritage, activities of high environmental value, productive investment and job creation.”

Until now, investors have mainly used the golden visa program to acquire permanent residency through the acquisition of real estate.
