Interest Rates on Mortgages Rose in January… Along with Monthly Payments

The implicit interest rate on all housing loan contracts increased from 1.019% in December 2017 to 1.024% in January 2018. However, it declined for contracts signed within the last three months to 1.595%. Concerning average monthly payments, it rose one euro compared to the previous month to 240 euros.

“Financing for Home Purchases, the most relevant type of credit in the housing loan sector, the implicit interest rate for the total contracts was 1.045%, 0.4 basis points higher than the previous month. In contracts signed during the previous three months, the interest rate for this type of financing went from 1.631% in December 2017 to 1.588% in the following month,” the website of the National Statistics Institute (INE) stated.

The size of the average outstanding loan increased by 38 euros in January compared to December 2017, reaching 51,728 euros.

“For the contracts signed in the last three months, the amount of the average outstanding loan increased from €93,788 in December 2017 to €94,049,” the INE reported.
