IMI Will Decrease in 52 Counties Throughout Portugal

8 January 2018

The IMI rate will decrease in 52 municipalities in 2018, and many municipalities are conceding discounts for taxpayers who have children. According to a report published in the Diário de Notícias (DN), 295 Portuguese municipalities had informed the Tax and Customs Authority by December 31 what IMI rate they intend to charge.

Of these, 234 municipalities opted to keep their rates unchanged – most of them already collect the minimum value allowed by law, 0.3%. 61 made changes. 52 municipalities lowered their rate, while only nine opted for an increase.

According to the DN, some municipalities made changes that were practically insignificant. In Arruda dos Vinhos, for example, the rate will fall from 0.389% to 0.385%, which means that an owner of a property valued at 85,000 euros will now pay three euros less in IMI.

However, in Celorico da Beira the tax relief is more apparent, with a reduction from 0.5% to 0.4%. In this case, an owner of a property valued at 85,000 euros will now pay 340 euros, instead of the 425 euros they would have paid in 2017.

Also, more families are expected to opt to sign up for discounts on the IMI rate for families. Once again, according to DN, 232 municipalities will charge reduced rates on property owners’ permanent residences, as long as they have families with dependents. Lisbon, Amadora, Loures, Oeiras, Cascais and Braga are the municipalities with the most substantial number of familial dependents, and all them will grant this benefit.
