IHRU Plans €16MM Investment to Restore 17 Neighbourhoods

3 October 2017

The Institute of Housing and Urban Renewal (IHRU) is developing a set of projects and applications for the rehabilitation of 17 housing districts, in an investment of more than 16 million euros.

The large-scale intervention will extend throughout Portugal, covering a total of 1,632 homes, spread over 17 housing districts, with backing by Portugal 2020’s urban renewal programs.

In a statement, the IHRU revealed that of the 17 projects under development, two were already approved, four applications are under consideration, and another 11 will be presented by the end of the year.

The two approved projects include the restoration of the Arcozelo housing district in Barcelos and 14 buildings in the Amarelo neighbourhood in Almada. The latter has one of the highest budget allocations of the projects under review.

The 17 projects are being implemented under the umbrella of two of Portugal 2020’s urban renewal programs, created in 2014 and 2015. The first is the Integrated Action Plans for the Disadvantaged Communities (PAICD) aiming at the physical, social and economic renewal of urban groups where disadvantaged communities live, and the Energy Efficiency Program, which seeks to increase the energy efficiency of homes.
