Empty and Ruined Homes to Pay Higher IMI Tax Rate

9 October 2019 – Property owners who own vacant homes may be penalised with a higher property tax (IMI) rate but only for the empty apartments, not the building as a whole. Those properties that have been declared as vacant for more than a year, or in ruins, may be charged up to three times the stipulated IMI rate.

Municipal authorities set the IMI rates in a band that goes from 0.3% to 0.45%. The local authorities also have the power to decide whether to charge the aggravated tax rate on vacant properties.
