Demolition Ordered for 28 Apartments in Albufeira

A Portuguese court ordered the demolition of 28 apartments in Albufeira.

A Portuguese court ordered the demolition of a block of flats that had received a license by the Albufeira town hall.

The municipality had issued licenses for the apartments that the Administrative and Tax Court of Loulé considered illegal. The town hall is attempting to halt the demolition by elaborating a Detail Plan for the area, according to Público.

The 28 apartments are in the Roja-Péro project, in Olhos d’Água, Albufeira. The owners began to be notified of the ruling this week, which must be enforced with 120 days.

The court ruled that a recreation area with pools for collective use had been planned for the land, but that the developer instead built a block of apartments.

According to Público, the Albufeira town council approved by order of the president of the time, Desidério Silva, the request for changes to the initial project to legalise a part of the works that had been done clandestinely. The developer thus obtained the right to increase the area of construction and the number of floors.
