Barreiro Seeks the Development of its Crown Jewel: the Quinta do Braamcamp

16 March 2018

The mayor of Barreiro, Frederico Rosa, stated that he hopes to have a project for the Quinta do Braamcamp defined by the middle of 2019. He added that the development is expected to include housing, hotels and restaurants, while maintaining the area open to the city.

“The Quinta do Braamcamp is one of the municipality’s crown jewels. It has 21 hectares of riverfront land, facing Lisbon, which can be an important lever for Barreiro and the redevelopment of the whole area,” the mayor stated.

Mayor Frederico Rosa (Socialist Party) participated in the international real estate fair, MIPIM, which took place this week in Cannes, France, where he met with potential investors.

“We are interested in discussing the project without just selling the land itself. We want to have housing, hotels, restaurants and recreation on the land, but it cannot be a closed condominium. I also will not permit the construction of a skyscraper in the area,” he said.

Mayor Rosa said that the municipality of Barreiro is motivated by the desire to make a decision regarding a potential project for the area by the middle of 2019.

According to the mayor, although the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) for the area dates to 1994, construction on the site had already been planned for.

“We have been approached by several developers touting their projects and ideas due to the real estate boom. We have already received preliminary projects from half a dozen investors, while others still need to submit their proposals.  We will soon need to decide. Both Portuguese and international investors have demonstrated an interest in participating,” he stressed.

In 2016, the Barreiro municipal council announced its acquisition of Quinta do Braamcamp, located on the margins of the Tagus River, in a 2.9-million-euro deal between the municipality and Banco Comercial Português.

The purchase was carried out under the municipality’s previous mayor, Carlos Humberto (PCP), but at the time, the opposition parties on the municipal executive authorised the operation.
