6 November 2017

In 2019, the tourist tax charged to visitors to Lisbon may double to two euros per night, a possible revision provided for in an agreement, aimed at local governance, that was signed by the PS and the Left Bloc.

Under the agreement, the value of the fee will be “re-evaluated by January 1, 2019”, the Jornal de Negócios reported. The new amount will equal the amount that will be charged to tourists in Porto as well, according to the same source.

The Lisbon tourist tax began to be charged on January 1, 2016, at a rate of 7 euros per stay, and it earned 13.5 million euros in the first year and is expected to reach €15 million by the end of 2017. The tax receipts are managed by the Lisbon Tourism Development Fund.
