The Portugal Pavilion’s Remodelling Will Cost 9.3 Million Euros

The Portugal Pavilion, which hosted the Portuguese exhibit at Expo’98 and belongs to the University of Lisbon (UL), will be remodelled to receive centres for congresses, exhibitions and one for hosting international visitors. The construction will cost 9.3 million euros.

A resolution of the Council of Ministers, which was published this Tuesday (May 22) in the Diário da República, authorised the UL to disburse the funds necessary to execute the construction. The rehabilitation and remodelling of the Portugal Pavilion will take place between 2019 and 2021, with a maximum investment of 9.3 million euros, plus VAT.

The Portugal Pavilion will become the home to a Congress Centre “with a 650-seat multi-purpose auditorium, which could be subdivided into two autonomous auditoriums, a minimum of nine rooms, large areas for circulation, reception and support facilities.”

“A modular exhibition centre, where different exhibitions can be organised at the same time, aimed in particular at the dissemination and promotion of knowledge and public use of UL’s vast scientific, cultural and artistic heritage,” will also be made available, the document reads.

The Portugal Pavilion will also host a Reception Centre for International Visitors, suitable for the internationalisation of the UL, which will provide reception services for students, professors and researchers associated with the university’s academic activities.

It should be noted that the rehabilitation and remodelling of the Portugal Pavilion will maintain the building’s original layout and increase the complementary link between the Main Building and the ceremonial square.

The Portugal Pavilion was designed by the award-winning architect Álvaro Siza and has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest. It has been a landmark in Portuguese architecture and culture since August 1, 2015, as part of UL’s heritage.
