Souto Moura Designs a New Luxury Resort in the Azores

A new real estate project, designed by Eduardo Souto Moura, is being built on the island of São Jorge, Azores. Mr Moura, an architect who won the Pritzker Prize in 2011 and was recently awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, will be responsible for designing a luxury resort which will be erected on a six thousand square meter plot of land in Fajã do Ouvidor, in the county of Velas.

The venture, according to the regional newspaper Diário Insular, is under development by the Sociedade Abilitylandia – a company based in Amadora, Lisbon, which is active in the real estate sector. The amount of the potential investment is not known, but the venture has the support of the SDEA – Business Development Society of the Azores. Other There entities such as the regional Directorates for Maritime Affairs, the Environment and Tourism have also publicly declared their support for the project.

The regional newspaper also reported that the island of São Jorge has been generating increased interest from outside investors, noting that close to a hundred and fifty of ruins on fajãs (coastal platforms formed by collapsed cliffs or lava flows) such as Cubres and Santo Cristo, “for exorbitant prices.”
