Sintra Will Invest More than €50m in Health, Education and Urban Rehabilitation

The construction of a new hospital, several health centres and a focus on urban regeneration, as well as the requalification of several educational establishments, are some of the investments planned by the Sintra Municipality, set to begin in 2018. The investments are part of the planned budget for the coming year.

Of total planned expenditures of €194 million, €52.2 million have been earmarked for these investments.  That is an increase of €12.2 million compared to the 2017 budget.

22.4 million euros will be invested in renovation works in public spaces and urban rehabilitation, starting in 2018.

€8.2m are destined for urban renewal, principally in Ribeira da Lage (€2.1m) and Urban Renewal Areas in Sintra, Mem Martins and Rio de Mouro, Agualva and Queluz / Belas) (€1.5m), the rehabilitation of the SAAL Neighborhood and the ruins at Quinta do Pego Longo (3.1 million).

The €1.2 million destined for social housing will be divided into rehabilitation and conservation (€0.7 million) and the acquisition of additional homes (€0.5 million).

The 5.6 million euros for green spaces will include the Blue Green Area (€2.9 million) and the Carregueira Urban Park (€1.8 million).

In education, of a total of €6.5 million, 3.2 million euros have been allocated for the expansion and remodelling of school buildings, €2.7 million for energy efficiency in school buildings and €600,000 for the refurbishment of dining areas.

According to the proposal presented to the executive, the total investment for improvements to roads amounts to 8.9 million euros, namely for improvements to and the maintenance of major roads and local bicycle lanes (€2 million).

€1.4 million has been budgeted for the construction of a Youth Hostel, and €1.2 million towards the requalification of sports equipment.

The construction of the new local hospital in Sintra and of several health centres: Algueirão-Mem Martins, Agualva, Almargem do Bispo, and Belas will also start in 2018, with completion expected of 2020. €36 million will be invested in that time frame.
