Portuguese Resorts Lead European Residential Tourism Sector

7 June 2018

Portuguese resorts have taken the lead in an evaluation of 26 residential tourism ventures in 9 countries.

An independent study, commissioned by the Portuguese Resorts Association (APR) and co-financed by COMPETE 2020, placed Portugal and Portuguese resorts at the top of the ranking.

The evaluation group the relevant criteria into three micro-categories, at the level of projects and businesses, and seven macro-categories at the country level. Each criterion was assigned a weighting that reflects the importance that a buyer/investor typically attributes to it. In the macro categories, Portugal obtained 63.4 points followed by Cyprus (62.3), Spain (57) and Turkey (56.4). At the level of businesses, the Portuguese resorts led with 34.6 points, followed by Turkey (33.2), Cyprus (29.1) and Spain (28.8).

The national residential tourism stood out in the categories ‘Offer’ – includes Characteristics, Services, number and quality of Golf Courses, and Development Status -, ‘Search’ – especially appealing prices and variety of the buyers’ nationalities -, and ‘Accessibility and Popularity’ – which includes criteria such as proximity to the sea, distance from airports and urban centres.
