According to data from Marktest and the Portuguese Association of Shopping Centres, available in the Geomarketing Sales Index system and its Online Municipalities web app, there are a total of 191 shopping centres in Portugal, including more than 13,000 stores and a total gross area of 3.7 million m2.

An analysis of Marktest’s data shows that the 191 existing shopping centres in Portugal are equivalent to approximately 900 m2 per 1000 families.

The data show that, on average, each mall has 69 stores and a gross area of 19,000 square meters. Taking into account the resident population, these establishments offer a gross area of 357 m2/1000 inhabitants and 908 m2 per 1000 families.

Lisbon is the county with the largest available area in shopping centres, 9% of the national total. Matosinhos follows with 6.5%, and Braga, with 5.1%, complete the list of the three municipalities with the largest gross areas.

It is not surprising, however, that the municipalities of Alcochete, Albufeira and Montijo have the largest proportion of gross area per 1000 inhabitants, with values four and six times above the national average. In Alcochete, the average is 2,255 m2 per 1000 inhabitants, in Albufeira of 1,702 m2 and in the Montijo of 1,437 m2.
