Portugal Rises to 5th Place in Ranking of the Best Countries in the World to Live and Work

8 September 2017

Portugal is fashionable, and it’s not surprising. The latest proof came from a study by Expat Insider, which revealed that Portugal is considered the 1st country in Europe and 5th in the world, in a ranking of the best places to live and work.

The rankings are from the fourth yearly edition of Expat Insider’s report, one of the largest studies in the world that examines expatriates’ (executives, skilled workers, students and retirees living outside their country of origin) quality of life. In 2017, more than 12,500 people living and working outside their home countries were interviewed, totalling 166 nationalities. Portugal was the country that advanced the most in the ranking of the best countries to live, reaching fifth place (rising 13 places since 2016), and was first in the world in terms of quality of life.

In this last ranking, Portugal dethroned Taiwan, winner of the category in 2016. Spain took third place, the second Iberian country to take its place in the top three.

Respondents based their opinions on the quality of life in Portugal on the climate and widely available leisure activities. Regarding entertainment options, Portugal ranks second in the ranking of 65 countries. Considering all of the interviews, not a single one criticised Portugal’s climate, and almost two-thirds (65%) rated it as excellent compared to 26% in the rest of the world.
