Olhão Leads Increases in Hotel Occupancy in August

8 September 2017

According to data from AHETA, the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of Algarve, released earlier this week, Olhão is leading the rise in the hotel occupancy rate in August in the Algarve, with a 4.1% increase compared to 2016.

“We are very pleased with these figures,” says the AHETA’s president, António Miguel Pina, who underlined that “they are a result of our plans to make Olhão a part of the high-quality international tourism experience, focused on nature, rather than aiming for the mass tourism market. Regardless, we are happy to see the results in this traditional holiday month.”

The average occupancy rate per hotel room in the Algarve during August stood at 93.9%, at the same level as the previous year, according to AHETA.

The British market saw the main decline (-16.3%), which is due to the devaluation of the pound by 15% in the last year.

On the other hand, the local Portuguese tourism recorded the highest increase (+10%), contrary to the tendency of the last year, followed by Germans (+4.6%), and there are still rises in smaller markets, namely Poland, France Sweden, Belgium, Denmark and Italy.

In cumulative terms, since the beginning of the year, the occupancy rate per room in the Algarve has increased by 2.2%, and turnover went up by 9.1%. Sales volume increased 3.8% during August, AHETA concluded.
