The Old Hotel Nau, in Cascais, Will Be Replaced by the Ed. Dom Pedro

Demolition is expected to start in the next few days, and the municipality expects the Dom Pedro Building to be completed in eighteen months.

After years of uncertainty, a decision has been made regarding the future of the land that was home to the Nau Hotel in Cascais. This Wednesday, the municipality, through the municipal company Cascais Próxima, and the Sociedade Inovar Cascais, signed the deed of purchase and sale for the former hotel’s lands, located on Iracy Doyle street, at the entrance of the city, as announced by the municipality on its Facebook page.

At an impasse for two decades due to a complex judicial process, the Edifício D. Pedro will replace the old Hotel Nau, which is next to the Cascais train station. The new project includes areas for housing, retail and services and is expected to be completed within 18 months, the municipality declared.

“Having overcome all obstacles, the entrance to Cascais will finally have the dignity it deserves. The municipality of Cascais managed to reduce the height and size of the projected building that had been initially approved,” the president of the chamber, Carlos Carreiras, said.

The mayor informed Público in February 2015 that projects were required to meet certain requirements, including a maximum of four floors and a total floor area of no more than 4,700 square meters, excluding projects involving shopping centres. The project was opened to public consultation, and the winning proposal announced in March of that year.

The vacant space will be transformed into the D. Pedro Building, which, according to what the municipality announced at the time, will include a “20-room guest house, a healthcare facility, a brewery and a residential area.”

Carlos Carreiras predicted that the new property would be ready by the end of his term. The old hotel’s structure had begun in February, but further delays hindered work until now.

The first stage of construction of the development, whose investors include Miguel Ribeiro Ferreira and Tim Vieira, the presenters and jury-members of the program “Shark Tank”, should begin “in the next few days.” This will involve the demolition of the remaining iron and concrete structure, the Cascais town council said, leading to the completion of the new D. Pedro Building within the stipulated time.
