Oeiras to Implement New Municipal Housing Policy

22 December 2017

The president of the municipality of Oeiras, Isaltino de Morais announced today that innovations in housing policies include “the construction of new houses for municipal housing, the requalification of municipal districts and the increase of access to affordable homes to the middle class.”

The updated housing policies in Oeiras will require upgrading municipal districts, thereby avoiding the degradation of their exteriors and support equipment, and also the construction of new houses for sale and rental. “It is not only needy families who require our support. There is also a middle class that has to be helped and will therefore also have access to municipal housing,” the mayor stated. She gave this reason as to why “we are going to have a new generation of housing policies, broadened to include other social classes”.

Mayor Morais also announced that “2018 will be the year that marks the beginning of the construction of new housing,” serving to start the “projects whose planning had already been completed in 2013 but have remained on paper since then.”

The innovations to the housing policy were presented this morning by the Mayor of Oeiras during a ceremony commemorating the delivery of houses to 14 families in need.

“After having been the first county in the country to put an end to families living in neighbourhoods of tents, through a policy of rehousing that guaranteed a home for every family, we now face new and more complex challenges”, Isaltino Morais stated in his speech, affirming that now “the development policy that we wish to implement in this county imposes higher levels of concern, to attend the population that is suffering from a lack of housing.”

The mayor emphasised that “housing is undoubtedly a stabilising social element and an engine of all subsequent growth and development of this county.”
