Nazaré to Host Five-Star Hotel Development

22 June 2018

The former Pedralva camping site in Nazaré will be replaced by a hotel development whose construction will complete the third phase of the regeneration of that tourist area and increase the village’s accommodation capacity.

The Nazaré town council approved the opening of a public tender for a 30-year concession of an area that once housed the Pedralva park camping site.

The land that will be ceded is part of an area housing municipal facilities and services (near the Nazaré Volunteer Fire Brigade), located near the main entrance of the Nossa Senhora dos Anjos Chapel (Ermida de NS dos Anjos), with an enviable view of the coast.

The space, where a campsite operated for about half a century [which has already been closed for five years], will be occupied by a newly developed tourist venture.

It will be “a 35-room hotel with two additional buildings for support and reception services for tourists,” said Walter Chicharro, the mayor Nazaré, adding that the project also includes “a kiosk, where drinks will be sold.”

Marco Moreira’s architectural project “was designed according to the geographical characteristics of the area and the existing landscape” in the park that, after two phases of regeneration, “is much sought after by families, both locals and visitors, who picnic and enjoy the playground and other facilities,” the mayor added.

The project – according to the mayor – is part of the third phase of requalification of Pedralva Park, where in recent years the town council has invested in the creation of a new garden and pedestrian crossings, the rehabilitation of sanitary facilities and the installation of furniture in the picnic park and playground.

The opening of the tourist development will, according to Mayor Chicharro, “dynamise the Pedralva area 24 hours a day, throughout the year,” and increase “the offer of accommodation at a time when Nazaré is increasingly attracting both the Portuguese and foreigners.”

The investment in the third phase of requalification of Pedralva Park also includes the installation of a platform overlooking Mont Blanc, a viewpoint which is currently closed off to the public due to concerns with safety.

The construction of the platform will be the responsibility of the concessionaire, and the municipality expects “a return of not less than 600,000 euros in 30 years [term of concession], which will allow reinvestment in the public use area.”

The contract, which will run for a period of 30 years, also requires a monthly rental payment of 1,500 euros to the town council.
