Municipality Will Invest 20 Million Euros in Lamego

13 December 2017

The municipality of Lamego announced that would invest about 20 million euros in the next few years implementing the project “Lamego 2021 … and beyond”, which covers the urban planning, mobility and environment sectors.

It is a “development strategy with a perfectly integrated vision, seeking to develop and implement different strategies for the different areas of the municipality, namely the organisation, planning and occupation of the territory,” the president of the municipality, Ângelo Moura, stated.

“The strategy necessarily involves mobility issues, with a special focus on access to the urban centre, which is a sensitive project,” said the mayor of Lamego, in the district of Viseu.

According to the mayor, “the whole strategy and all the work that is to be implemented in the next four years has been developed, using the various tools available, such as planning and financial” from a project to improve access to the city centre.

According to Mr Moura, access will be provided utilising a tunnel about a kilometre from the motorway junction, which will connect directly to the central node of the city of Lamego.

As part of the project “Lamego 2021 … and beyond”, the municipality intends to implement a series of interventions for urban regeneration and reintegration, the re-qualification of several streets and the historic centre and improvement of the connection to the School of Hospitality.

The action plan also involves the creation of the Lamego urban park, with common areas for enjoyment, and the construction of an intervention and recreational centre, as well as pedestrian zones.

The project is to be carried out “in part” in the current government’s mandate, which lasts until 2021. But according to Angelo Moura, there are others, such as the construction of accesses to the city centre which will continue until 2025.

“Most of the projects identified will be completed in this mandate, but the construction of the tunnel, which will necessarily imply a partnership with the central government, will not be possible in the next four years,” said the mayor.

The project “Lamego 2021 … and beyond” will be carried out with aid from various community funds, in which the municipality will benefit from a support package of around 11 million euros.
