Metro do Porto: New Lines Will Begin to Be Designed in January

22 December 2017

The Metro do Porto has chosen a design team for its new subway lines. The selected group will begin studies and designs in January, in contracts valued at 3.3 million euros.

In a statement, the company said that the tender jury’s final decision was delivered to the Board of Directors on Wednesday, which validated it, adding that the contracts with the designers will be formalised in the coming days.

The new Rosa Line (G) project was awarded to a consortium made up of SENER, CJC and NSE, worth 1.82 million euros, and the extension of the Yellow Line (D) to LCW, Amberg Engineering and GRID, for €1.47 million.

Rosa Line: 2,5 km and four underground stations

The Rosa Line (G) will have a length of 2.5 kilometres, with four underground stations and will be designed by Eduardo Souto Moura. Mr Moura was the architect responsible for the design of the first phase of the Metro – providing a connection between São Bento, Cordoaria/Santo António Hospital, Galicia/Maternal-Child Centre and Casa da Música/Rotunda da Boavista.

SENER, CJC and NSE are required to submit a preliminary study, environmental impact assessment, environmental impact statement and execution project within 330 days, according to Metro do Porto.

Yellow Line: 3.2 km and three new stations

The southern extension of the Yellow Line will connect Santo Ovídio to Vila d’Este, serving the Hospital de Gaia, for a distance of 3.2 kilometres, including three new stations.

The deadline for LCW, Amberg Engineering and GRID to carry out this project and to obtain an environmental impact statement is 270 days.

Metro do Porto explained that out of a total of 12 competitors, six consortia had been pre-approved in mid-November to provide designs for the two new lines.

“With the projects’ development taking place during 2018, the tenders will be launched for the construction of the Rosa Line and the extension of the Yellow Line at the end of the year, so that construction could begin in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in the first months of 2019. The project should be completed by 2022,” the company stated.

According to Metro do Porto, the new lines will serve more than 33,000 people on a daily basis.

The overall investment in this phase of expansion of the Metro network is around 290 million euros.
