July 5, 2021 – Ana Custódio

Hotel Casa da Companhia is the Mercan Group’s latest luxury hotel project.

The new hotel will open today in Porto’s historical centre, on the iconic Rua das Flores, located in an area classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and close to Porto’s main monuments. Casa da Companhia involved an 11.2-million-euro investment by the Mercan group to restore and refurbish the historic 18th-century building.

The new five-star boutique hotel joins history, comfort and quality in each of its 40 rooms, 10 of which are suites, where elegance and good taste are evident in every detail.  In addition to the luxurious rooms and restaurant, Casa da Companhia boasts an outdoor pool with a view of the Sé Cathedral, a 160-m2 wellness centre with an indoor heated pool, gymnasium, treatment room for two people, sauna and Turkish bath.

The lines of the three-century-old building, where Real Companhia Velha, one of the oldest and most prestigious companies producing Port wine, was located, have been maintained. Europlan designed the architectural project, and the entire interior design was developed by Paulo Lobo’s Atelier, taking into account the connection to Real Companhia Velha.

According to Jordi Vilanova, vice-president of the Mercan Group, “This project makes the Mercan Group very proud, due to the care that was taken in the rehabilitation of a building that is part of this city’s history and that is now gaining new life, thanks to the interest of international investors. Casa da Companhia honours the tradition’s of Porto through its architecture and the connection to port wine that has always marked the city.”

The executive also added that the hotel “is an investment that allows us to leverage other projects and increase employments, as it will ensure 23 direct jobs, besides the indirect ones that stem from partnerships with local suppliers.”

Filipe Silva, President of Ace Hospitality Management (AHM), the company managing the hotel, said, “Casa da Companhia is more than a hotel, it is a landmark in the city of Porto. Despite the current drop in tourism flows due to the pandemic, Porto continues to be a much desired and sought-after destination, and it is necessary to strengthen and diversify its hotel offer. The quality and elegance of the hotel’s various spaces are absolutely aligned with an excellent service to our guests. We will work towards positioning Casa da Companhia as another benchmark in the hotel market in the city of Porto.”
