Lisbon City Council Received Revenues of More than €9,000 per day with Airbnb

27 November 2017

Just do the math. The accommodation platform Airbnb reported Monday that it had already paid €3.1 million in tourist taxes to the Lisbon City Council during 2017. Since May 1, 2016, it has paid nearly five million euros. Airbnb was the only platform to collect the tourist tax (one euro per night) for the Lisbon City Council.

On Friday, the company will launch a new ad registration tool, reinforcing the partnership with the Airbnb community in Portugal by working in cooperation with local authorities.

“We want to have a good partnership with Portugal, and we are therefore proud to introduce this registration tool and to help local families share their homes while following all the rules. We are also aware that local tourist accommodation is an engine which helps governments increase their tax revenues and helps the communities. Our hosts want to pay their fair share of taxes, and we are very pleased to work with the government to help them while we continue to lead the industry in this area,” Arnaldo Muñoz, representative of Airbnb in Portugal, said in a statement.

The new tool, he says, will make it easier for hosts to enter their hosting registration number on their ad page, an incentive to comply with local regulations, and at the same time keep them informed and up-to-date on any changes to Portuguese laws.
