IHRU to Invest €1.8 million Rehabilitating Three Social Housing Districts in Portugal’s North

The Regional Operational Program NORTE [North] 2014-2020 recently approved applications submitted by the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) for the rehabilitation of the social housing districts of Meadela and the Technical School Zone in Viana do Castelo and Pinto Balsemão in Mirandela. The total investment is projected to reach 1,819,805.75 euros and will directly benefit 178 families.

The interventions in these social housing neighbourhoods will be supported by EU-ERDF financial assistance worth €1,328,896.48,” corresponding to 85% of the total investment of €1,563,407.62,” the IHRU said in a statement.

The Institute further stated that the proposed rehabilitation operations “have been planned in conjunction with the interventions to public spaces that the municipality of Viana do Castelo expects to carry out in those localities. The interventions will be carried out within the framework of their respective Integrated Action Plan for Disadvantaged Communities (PAICD), an integral part of the Strategic Urban Development Plan (PEDU).”

The interventions will directly benefit 178 families and will focus on the rehabilitation of the buildings’ external surroundings and common areas. The objective is to increase the energy efficiency of the individual homes, increase indoor air quality, reinforce the structural system and increase the acoustic and visual comfort of the building.

“Through this intervention, we aim to increase the welfare, comfort level and self-esteem of the residents in these neighbourhoods, extending the associated positive effects to the surrounding communities, who will benefit from the urban area’s regeneration, thus contributing to social development and economic dynamisation of these areas,” the IHRU reported.

These applications are a part of a series of projects and that the IHRU is developing to rehabilitate 17 social housing districts, with a total 1,632 homes and an investment of 16,335,371 euros.
