Hotel Da Guarda Comes Closer to Private Management

1 August 2017

The public tender was announced this Tuesday, August 1, in the Diário da República. Interested parties now have 42 days to submit proposals.

A further step towards the eventual private management of the Guarda Tourist Hotel was recently taken. This Tuesday, August 1, the Diário da República published an announcement regarding the opening of a public tender for the conversion of the historic building for use as a hotel.

The property was acquired by Turismo de Portugal in 2011, with the intention of installing a hotel administration school there, but the plan never went ahead. It’s now a part of the Revive program.

Those interested in operating the Guarda Tourism Hotel will now have 42 days to submit an application. There is a proposed concession period of 50 years. “The future hotel will also be able to take part in training programs in conjunction with the region’s educational institution,” the Tourism Secretary said.

This is the third of 33 properties included in the Revive program, which takes real estate owned by the Portuguese government and uses private companies to recuperate and manage the properties. The first was the Saint Paul Convent in Elvas, now managed by the hotel group Vila Galé, where renovations, at a projected investment of five million euros, have already begun.

The second property was the D. Carlos I Park Pavilions in Caldas da Rainha, part of a former thermal hospital. The Visabeira group – which also owns Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics – was the only candidate, with 15-million-euro proposal to invest in the construction of a five-star hotel.
