Gabriel Couto Builds “Boutique Hotel” In Porto

29 November 2017

Gabriel Couto was responsible for the construction of the Hotel Torel Avantgarde, the latest five-star boutique hotel in the city of Porto, designed by NN Arquitectura.

Located at 336 Rua da Restauração, just 500 meters from the Clérigos Tower, a new hotel was created with a total of 47 rooms, 37 of which overlook the river Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Torel Boutiques group, which owns the Torel Palace Lisboa and the Torel Cliff Surf & Golf, has rehabilitated the property in Porto, giving it artist-inspired notes. From classic rooms to the royal suite, the design and décor reflect the personality of artists related to art, literature and science, such as Francis Bacon, Charles and Ray Eames, Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso and Ignazio Jacometti.

The new boutique hotel also has a restaurant called Digby, inspired by Portuguese cuisine with a contemporary touch, a spa with a gym, Turkish bath, two massage rooms, and an outdoor swimming pool with breath-taking views. As in every room, art is a dominant theme here, and the decorative project was developed by four Portuguese artists: Jorge Curval, Frederico Draw, Daniel Eime and Paulo Neves.

During the construction, the central body of the building was widened, and the roof facing the street was raised, thus extending the upper floor. The need for the works to proceed simultaneously with the various infrastructure projects was the project’s most significant challenge, which required accurate preparation and careful attention in the execution of the new construction. “The requirements that come with being a five-star hotel, which is demands attention to the smallest details in terms of the interior design, and where each room has a different theme and decoration, has forced a level perfectionist detail in all phases of the construction company Gabriel Couto’s renovation” as stated in a description of the rehabilitation.
