Former Barracks to be Converted into Affordable Housing

3 June 2020 The Portuguese government is proceeding in its quest to convert the former headquarters of the Republican National Guard (GNR), the country’s gendarmerie, into affordable housing. The Lisbon City Hall approved the beginning of an alteration to the Municipal Master Plan to allow the project to move ahead.

The government added the property to its National Building Rehabilitation Fund, which managed by Fundiestamo, three years ago. The fund finances urban renewal using monies from the Social Security Financial Stabilisation Fund.

Plans for the site on the Largo do Cabeço de Bola, in Lisbon, involve converting the 22,000-m2 former barracks into 240 flats incorporated in the Affordable Rental Program. The project includes support infrastructure for the elderly, shops and services.
