Forbes Places Lisbon in a List of the Top Ten Best and Cheapest Cities to Live

16 January 2018

The prestigious American magazine Forbes placed Lisbon at the top of a list of the ten best places in the world for foreigners to move in 2018 and live very well for very little.

The magazine based its reporting on Live and Invest Overseas, which advises people on how to move to the cheapest places to live in 2018. Forbes spoke to Kathleen Peddicord, editor of Live and Invest Overseas, who revealed the defining features of each of the cities that entered the list.

The city of Lisbon comes in first place as it ” is an enjoyable place to [live] and is our top choice,” Peddicord stated, describing Lisbon as a “noble and elegant city” full of “inspiring places that were built during the Golden Age of Discovery.”

According to Peddicord, Lisbon – and the whole of Portugal – offers a competitive cost of living, which is among the lowest in Western Europe, thanks to an “enviable tax regime” and many properties that can be found at a bargain. It is possible to live here comfortably, though modestly, with a budget of just $1,300 per month, including rent, food and more. Also, the option to purchase a home is desirable.

Other things that make Lisbon attractive are: beautiful, pastel stone buildings, formal gardens, parks with elaborate fountains, cobbled roads in contrasting colours and “sea scenes that are like works of art,” Peddicord told Forbes.

Following Lisbon are Cali in Colombia; Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic; then San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize; Saint-Chinian, France; Abruzzo, Italy; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Playa del Carmen, Mexico; Bali, Indonesia and Da Nang in Vietnam.
