European Travel Commission Names Luís Araújo As New Chair

10 September 2020 – According to a statement by Turismo de Portugal, Luís Araújo, the president of Turismo de Portugal, has been named the chair of the European Travel Commission (ETC). The association represents 33 national tourism organisations from 31 European countries. The Portuguese executive will lead the ETC for the next four years.

The statement added that Luís Araújo is “extremely proud to be able to lead a European organisation on behalf of our country and Tourism in Portugal, especially at a time when European, and even world tourism, is facing one of the greatest, if not the greatest challenge ever.” Mr Araújo added that one of the priorities is to give the tourism sector a more active voice within the European Union, to foment a rapid and sustainable recovery.

Tourism is one of the economic engines of many EU states, including Portugal. Last year, tourism contributed about 15% of the country’s GDP and provides tens of thousands of jobs.
