€900 Million to Be Invested in Measures Aimed at the Portuguese Coast

The Environment Minister, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, said that the Portuguese government would invest approximately 900 million euros over the next ten years, in measures aimed at minimising the effects of climate change.

Minister Fernandes also said that works would be carried out to redevelop areas behind coastal dunes so that “people continue to enjoy these spaces.” “The works will range from Caminha to Vila Real de Santo António, and will focus primarily on [environmental] protection, done with natural techniques,” he explained. He added that there are priority works slated for Ovar, where there will be “a large-scale intervention, most likely in an area which is suffering from the effects of erosion.

“Rehabilitation works on the coast at Vila Nova de Milfontes are valued at 4.9 million euros and include upgrades to the Malhão Beach, reinforcement of the dune system and the adding sand to the beaches at Franquia and Furnas, through the transposition of sediments from the mouth of the river Mira.

The Minister also said that these interventions, under the Polis program of the Southwest Alentejo, “are important improvements to the environment while, at the same time, reinforcing an area that suffers from the constant assault of the sea on the area.” “This is a significant project for the Alentejo coast and an example of our investments there, which almost always use forms of natural engineering focused on the conservation of the coastline,” he added.
