Current Naval Yard Will Be Recreation and Leisure Area

21 February 2018

The area between the cruise terminal and the Terreiro do Paço river terminal, where the naval yard is currently located, will be transformed into recreational and leisure zone.

The Lisbon City Council (CML), the Ministry of Defence and the Lisbon Port Authority (APL) signed an agreement  Wednesday which will permit the transfer of the Naval Yard to the Santos Docks and its subsequent inclusion of into the Campos de Cebola urban renewal project.

As an integral part of a policy of returning the Tagus riverfront to the local population, the area has been added to a contiguous area that includes the Cais do Sodré, Ribeira das Naus and the Praça do Comércio, along with the region allocated to the cruise terminal.

The signing was carried out by the president of the CML, Mayor Fernando Medina, the president of the APL, Lídia Sequeira, and by the Portuguese Navy’s Chief of Staff, Admiral António Manuel Ribeiro, representing the Ministry of Defence.

During the ceremony, Mayor Medina stressed the “profound impact” that this agreement will have on the city of Lisbon, considering it to be “a decisive step towards opening the riverfront to the eastern part of the city. We are talking about a radically different city from the one we had 15 years ago.”
