Catalonia Will Expand to Portugal in 2020

12 December 2017

Catalonia Hotels & Resorts’ first asset in Portuguese lands will open its doors in 2020, according to the chain. The 86-room, four-star hotel will be located in the historic centre of the city of Porto.

Catalonia has acquired a set of five buildings of historical interest from the Portuguese company Lucios Engineering and Construction, to transform the properties into the chain’s first hotel in the country. The buildings are located next to the central Praça da Batalha and will be completely rehabilitated. The main facade will be preserved as a protected architectural heritage of the city, and the project will be executed and delivered turnkey by the same company, Lucios Engineering and Construction. The complex will have a garden, outdoor pool, spa and meeting room, among other facilities. The Portuguese project will entail a total investment of 14 million euros by Catalonia, between the purchase of the buildings and their subsequent renovation. The rehabilitation works are expected to begin immediately and will last between eighteen and twenty-four months.

The new hotel in Porto will be added to the list of upcoming inaugurations that the hotel chain has announced, among which are operations in cities such as Granada, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Milan and Riviera Maya. Catalonia Hotels & Resorts’ director of expansion, Federico Holzmann, affirmed that “this operation will constitute the company’s entrance in our neighbouring country, where we are continuing to look for opportunities, both in Porto itself and in Lisbon.” Holzmann added that “Catalonia is continuing its expansion policy, both nationally and internationally, focused on destinations of tourist interest and principally marked by the projected profitability of any possible ventures.”
