Câmara de Leiria Approves Construction of Jardim da Almuinha Grande

13 December 2017

The Leiria Town Council approved a public tender for the award of a contract for the construction of Jardim da Almuinha Grande, valued at more than 2.1 million euros.

After completing the construction, which is expected to last one year, Leiria will have “a garden with more than five hundred new trees, about 1,900 new shrubs, a lake and walking paths along the river Lis,” the local council announced in a statement. “The will be facilitated access for people with disabilities,” it added. According to the municipality, Almuinha Grande’s Detail Plan, dated 1992, had already envisioned a garden for that locale.

“One of the benefits of the project will be the possibility of organising urban activities, such as the Levante Market, and initiatives aimed at leisure and informal sports, events, small fairs and concerts,” it stated.

With this construction, “the connection of the ecological and urban system of New Leiria and the Marrazes to the corridor of the river Lis,” will be completed. “The creation of an outdoor amphitheatre, a terrace with views of the garden and the castle, a lengthy public promenade and a large clearing that will have grasslands, providing for intense family and intergenerational use,” adds.

The municipality considers that, with these new areas, the population will have at its disposal “a green space with comfort and security for the exercise of leisure activities, physical activity, events, small fairs, parties, concerts, among others.” The investment of €2,146,617 (plus VAT) will be reimbursed at a rate of 85% as part of an application for the Centre’s Regional Operational Program. The project had been approved in March at a meeting of the Leiria’s town council.
