The French group has started construction of a new, 116-room hotel.

Last week, B&B Hotels started the construction contract of a new hotel in the city of Viana do Castelo, which should be completed in September next year. The group plans to invest 5.24 million euros to build a 116-room hotel.

The hotel will cover an area of 4,000 metres and will be located on Estrada da Papanata, reinforcing the city and municipality’s supply of hotels.

Last October, the firm signed the contract with the developer Rendimo, the mayor of Viana, José Maria Costa, announced that it was “proof of the confidence in the city, the municipality and Alto Minho.”

According to José Maria Costa, “This new hotel will fill an existing gap in hotel supply. Being international chain, it will increase and enhance the internationalization of the city through its own network,” adding that Viana do Castelo “is starting to be looked with great interest by international chains.”

According to Rendimo’s Celso Ferreira, the signing of the investment contract for the hotel “demonstrates the area’s competitiveness.” “The crossing of clusters in the region gives us the guarantee that this is a sustainable and profitable project for leisure and business tourism,” Mr Ferreira added. Furthermore, he believes that the hotel will “help show Viana do Castelo to the whole world.”

Torcato Faria, from B&B HOTELS, noted that it would be a techno-chic unit in the mould of a “smart hotel,” modern, comfortable and attractive to the client.

The B&B Hotels chain began in France in 1990. Apart from four hotels in Portugal, B&B Hotels has over 500 hotels and more than 40,000 rooms in 12 countries: Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Brazil, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Belgium.
