Bank of Portugal Reports Increase in Housing Loans to €11.4 billion in 2020

According to data released by the Bank of Portugal (BoP), the country’s banks issued a total of €11.4 billion in new mortgages for house purchases in 2020, up from €10.6 billion recorded in 2019.

The BoP stated that “In 2020, … new lending for housing, consumption and other purposes totalled €11.4 billion, €4.3 billion and €2.2 billion in that order (compared to €10.6 billion, €5.3 billion and €2.3 billion in 2019 respectively.”

The Bank of Portugal also noted that interest rates on new loans to individuals continued their downward trend of 2020. New loans to households for buying homes continued their upward trajectory, reaching 1.203 billion euros in December, levels last hit in mid-2008.
