Arroios, Alameda and Saldanha Are the Most Sought-After Areas in Lisbon by Students

14 August 2018

Uniplaces’s online accommodation platform for university students studied which were the most sought-after areas to live for university students in the cities of Lisbon and Porto during the first six months of 2018, as well as the preferred rental models.

In general, students in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra prefer renting an entire property (Lisbon: 54%, Porto: 63%, Coimbra: 64%), followed by shared homes with private rooms and then by shared rooms.

In the city of Lisbon, Arroios continued to be the area with the most reservations, both by Portuguese students and other nationalities. Currently, the average rent in the area is 393 euros, an increase of 18% compared to 2017. At the opposite point is Santa Apolonia, one of the least sought-after areas, due to having the highest rent, 564 euros.

In Porto, Paranhos, Cedofeita and Bonfim are the areas where both Portuguese and international students most often seek accommodations using the Uniplaces platform. Paranhos, the most sought-after area, has an average rent of 347 euros, up 38% over the previous year. Santo Ildefonso is the most expensive area for students, with an average rent of 577 euros.

In Coimbra, the downtown area is the most sought after, with an average rent of 276 euros. The most expensive area for students is Penedo da Saudade, which has an average rent of 407 euros.

“Ease of access, public transportation and proximity to universities are decisive factors when students are choosing the neighbourhood in which to rent a house or a room, also reflecting the areas where more contracts are signed through the Uniplaces platform. The average rents in the most sought-after areas experienced a slight increase in these first months of the year, influenced mainly by the disparity between demand and supply,” says Giovanni Lavra, Country Manager for Uniplaces in Portugal.

The platform also shows that, during the first half of 2018, the number of total nights booked on the platform registered a 24% increase over the same period of the previous year, exceeding 1,300,000 nights. Lisbon was the European city with the greatest number of booked nights for the online platform, followed by Madrid, Porto, Barcelona and Milan.
