Airbnb Hosts in Rural Portugal Report Soaring Occupancy Rates

7 September 2020 – Airbnb hosts in less well-travelled destinations in Portugal, particularly in the country’s interior, saw the use of local accommodations soar by up to 248% in the case of Viseu. During the summer, Portuguese tourists using Airbnb mainly chose to visit nearby locales, less than 500 km from their homes.

Other regions also saw marked increases in occupancy rates, including the Azores (190%), Vila Real (180%), Castelo Branco (164%) and Santarém (156%). The cities of Santa Bárbara de Nexe (Faro), Boliqueime (Faro), Pombal (Leiria), São João das Lampas (Lisbon), Gondomar (Porto), Monsanto (Castelo Branco), Póvoa de Lanhoso (Braga), Moreira (Porto), Lagoa (Faro) and Vilela (Vila Real) benefited most from the trend.
