Properties With No Known Owners to Be Transferred to Portuguese State

26 October 2018

“Under the terms of the Civil Code, lands with no known owner will be transferred to the State,” the Deputy Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, stated.

The Deputy Minister, Pedro Siza Vieira, spoke before the Committee on Budget, Finance and Administrative Modernisation, during hearings on the State Budget (OE) for 2018, at the National Assembly in Lisbon.

Buildings with no identifiable owner will be transferred to the Portuguese state and managed by the Forest Management Company, the Jornal de Negócios reported Friday.

“Under the terms of the Civil Code, land with no known owner will be considered state-owned,” the Deputy Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, stated outside a meeting of the Council of Ministers on fires and forests, on Thursday, October 25.

Although the Civil Code provides for the transfer, “no regulated process in Portugal could determine with certainty what these buildings are and how they can be converted to public property.”

The Government approved a decree that aims to regulate the entire process of recognition.
