Former Feira Popular to Be the Site of 700 Homes with Affordable Rents

The project extends beyond the lands of the Feira Popular (Flea Market), covering a total of 25 hectares. It encompasses nearly one thousand new homes, a large office complex, stores and others.

The Lisbon City Council’s project to revitalise the area in Entrecampos foresees a total of nearly one thousand new dwellings, 279 of which would be sold on the open market, a large office complex, commercial spaces and new social and cultural facilities. The project will be placed under public consultation next week, Expresso reported.

The “Entrecampos Integrated Operation” is directed at the lands of the former Feira Popular. However, the intervention will also include two properties which are adjacent to the Avenida Álvaro Pais and several areas next to the Avenue das Forças Armadas. In all, the project will cover 25 hectares, in nearby areas, of which 2.5 are slated to be green areas.

The project provides for the construction of 979 dwellings, most of which will be new builds, though some will also be reconversions. 279 will be constructed within the perimeter of the former Feira Popular. These properties will be put up for sale by the developer who eventually acquires the land.

Most of the housing stock (700), however, is slated for affordable rental homes. Of the total, the municipality itself will build 515. Another 122 will be reconversions form existing buildings which were previously offices owned by the Ministry of Labor. The remaining 63 homes will be built by Santa Casa da Misericórdias, using their existing lots.
