Will the Barceló and NH Hotel Chains Merge?

7 September 2017

It looks like that is where the two companies are heading. According to the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, the Barceló hotel chain hired Banco Santander “as an adviser to study a possible merger with NH Hotels, creating a Spanish tourism giant with more than 100,000 rooms in 31 countries and much more negotiating power with the online agencies.’”

According to El Confidencial, which cites sources familiar with the operation, there have already been preliminary contacts between major shareholders.

The Barceló chain has a strong presence in Latin America, the Caribbean and USA – with 230 hotels and 700 travel agencies on four continents – while NH is particularly strong in Europe, mainly in particular in the major urban centres: 337 hotels in 31 countries.
