West, Alentejo And Leiria/Fatima/Templários With Significant Rise in Occupancy Rates in September

The West, Alentejo and Leiria/Fátima/Templários destinations registered a “very expressive increase in occupancy rates” in homologous terms in September, according to the AHP Tourism Monitors report that was published today.

According to the AHP – the Portuguese Hotel and Catering Association, which bases a monthly report on the data, in the West, “the occupancy rate was 79%, a rise of 9.5 percentage points” compared to the same period of 2016.

In the same period, the average price per occupied room increased by 13% to 77 euros.

In the Alentejo, hotels had a room occupancy rate of 81% and an average price per available room of 60 euros, increases of 7.7% and 21%, respectively, compared to September of last year.

“The average price per occupied room was 74 euros this month, showing a growth of 10%,” the AHP said in a statement.

Concerning the Leiria/Fatima/Templar area, the occupancy rate rose by 6.9 percentage points to 78% and “the average price per occupied room was 56 euros, while RevPar [average price per available room] increased by 28%, reaching 44 euros.”

In September, the occupancy rate rose 2.2 percentage points year-on-year, with Lisbon (27%), Leiria/Fátima/Templários (17%) and Costa Azul (16%) showing the highest growth in this indicator,” AHP Tourism Monitors reported.

RevPar “also registered significant growth of 18% compared to the same month last year, reaching 89 euros, with the tourist destinations Lisbon (124 euros), Algarve (99 euros) and Estoril (93 euros) registering the highest values, “he said,

The average hotel revenue per tourist increased by 13%, to 144 euros in the month under analysis.

“In the analysis by tourist destinations, Lisbon once again was the destination that grew the most, with a 28% increase compared to September 2016, followed by Leiria/Fátima/Templários rising by 23% and Coimbra up by 21%,” it reported.

“In terms of occupancy rates, we are witnessing significant growth of ‘less mature’ destinations like the West, Alentejo and Leiria/Fátima/Templários, which registered increases of between the seven and the 10 percentage points this month and closed the month at around 80%,” Cristina Siza Vieira, executive president of the Hotel Association of Portugal, was quoted saying in a statement.

“Noteworthy as well for the ARR [average price per occupied room], which together with the increased demand in all destinations”, as well as “highlighting that Lisbon’s growth was 28%”, the report added.

In RevPar, it went on to say, “that the major increases were in all categories of hotels and all destinations, with the west (29%) and Leiria/Fatima/Templários (28%)” standing out.
