Seixal to Open Public Tender for Hotel Mundet

6 June 2018

The municipality on the south bank of the Tagus river approved the opening of a public auction for the sale of a 3,680-m2 plot of land belonging to the municipal private domain, for the construction of a tourist development (Hotel Mundet), on the Seixal riverside, as part of a strategy aiming at boosting tourism using public assets.

The new hotel will have a concept linked to cork since it will occupy the former administrative headquarters of the Mundet Cork factory, which was, at the time, the largest industrial unit in the sector. The future hotel will be a 4, or higher, star unit, set in a 3,680-m2 plot of land, with the possibility of building three floors (plus one recessed) and underground parking, with capacity for more than 150 rooms.

The competition will take place in two phases. In the first, the pre-qualification phase, “the candidates will have to present a project for the hotel unit that they intend to build, as well as a pre-developed management model. The second phase will involve bids for the lot, restricted to the candidates that were qualified in the first phase.”

The future Seixal riverside hotel will be part of the vast Seixal Urban Park that will be built on the grounds of the old Mundet, with an area equivalent to 6 football fields (5.3 hectares). The area will be of immense importance for the improvement of the urban environment and the population’s quality of life.

According to the municipality, the number of visitors to Seixal increased by 65% from 2016 to 2017, with a significant number of tourists arriving by recreational boating. About 500 boats landed in 2017 at the Baía do Seixal Nautical Station, much sought after for the unique conditions of the Bay and the services it offers. Visitors principally come from countries like France, Denmark, Germany and Brazil. Also, the number of foreigners who have acquired homes in the county has increased significantly in recent years.
