Portugal Among the Top 6 European Destinations on Airbnb

Airbnb, the leading community hospitality platform, revealed that 1,113,000-people booked accommodations in Portugal this summer (June, July and August) through the platform, representing a growth of 59% compared to the same period of last year. Portugal ranked sixth during that time regarding visits to European destinations by Airbnb users.

Of these travellers, more than 218,000 people travelled together with their families, choosing to book their accommodations through Airbnb for the summer holidays. This ranked Portugal in eighth place among European countries.

In a statement, the platform reports that the number of Portuguese nationals booking accommodation on the Airbnb platform this summer increased 73% to 173,000, compared with 100,000 registered in the summer of last year. Of these, about 39,000 were travelling families that opted to use Airbnb for their accommodations.

The destinations that saw the greatest growth among Portuguese travellers were within Portugal itself, with particular emphasis on the north and the Azores archipelago. However, Santarém took the top place with an increase of 609%. Póvoa de Varzim (up 316% compared to the same period last year), Vila do Conde (+220%), and Esposende (+198%) are the cities in the north. In the Azores, Madalena (+199%) and Angra do Heroísmo (+182%) were the destinations with the highest growth. Regarding foreign destinations, Glasgow in Scotland stands out with an increase of 224% compared to the summer of 2016.

Around the world, Airbnb this summer received 45 million guests, of whom 8 million were family travellers. The best night, regarding the number of reservations on the platform, was on August 12 with 2.6 million guests.
