November Has Become a “Very Strong” Month for Tourism

8 November 2017

The Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, said today that November has become “very strong” for the tourism sector in Portugal, namely through Lisbon’s Web Summit.

During a visit to the technology and entrepreneurship conference taking place for the second consecutive year in Lisbon, the minister commented to Lusa that “the tourism season has extended year-round”, with November becoming a “solid month.”

At the base of this evolution are the “dynamics brought by events” such as the Web Summit, which also serves as a showcase for the country as a great event organiser.

“The impact is very positive, and it’s great that the Web Summit happens,” he said.

Ana Mendes Godinho noted how the Web Summit is also a “showcase and a stage” for ideas and new businesses from all over the world, including Portuguese companies in the tourism sector, as well as an opportunity to show a new phase of an acceleration project in tourism schools.

The partnership with start-ups aims to make the 12 schools a “space of innovation and contagion”, she concluded.

The Web Summit runs until Thursday, at the Altice Arena (former Meo Arena) and the Lisbon International Fair (FIL).

According to the organisation, 59,115 people from 170 countries, among them more than 1,200 speakers, two thousand start-ups, 1,400 investors and 2,500 journalists participated in the second edition of the event in Portugal.

The technological, innovation and entrepreneurship summit was born in 2010 in Ireland and moved to Lisbon in 2016 for three years, with the possibility of extending its stay for another two years in the Portuguese capital.
