Hotel Mondego in Coimbra to be “Resurrected”

3 April 2018

The building that housed the now long-defunct Hotel Mondego, in downtown Coimbra, next to Coimbra B Train Station, will be rehabilitated and upgraded.

The owners, entrepreneurs from Soure who run the company Móveis Okapi, intend to reopen the upgraded hotel, thereby benefiting from the growth in tourism that the city is experiencing. The rehabilitation project, designed by a well-known atelier in the centre of the country, envisions a 30-room three-star hotel.

Sofia Andrade, the owner of the property, spoke with Diário Imobiliário, stating that “a project has already been submitted to the City Hall and is awaiting approval,” for which reason she was unable to provide further details. The executive related that their initial intention had been to build a 4-star hotel, but the larger room sizes would have led to a lower number of total rooms, rendering the financial viability of the hotel unworkable.

The owners of Okapi furniture, Sofia Andrade’s parents, acquired the property twenty years ago. Ms Andrade told us that her company would directly operate the future Hotel Mondego, saying: “Our hotel will be unique, with breath-taking views of the river and the colleges, and will include several surprises.” The executive declined to disclose the amount of the investment since it is dependent on the municipality’s approval of the final project.
